∞Seventeen∞

“EMILY I’M SO PROUD OF YOU, what you did up there was so brave.” My dad hugged me tightly.

“Dad, I had no idea you’d be here, but I’m so happy to see you.” I cried even more.

Knowing that my dad stood there and listened to my speech made me feel prouder than I’d been in so long. He traveled across the country to support me. The emotions overwhelmed me like a flood. I pulled away and looked into his eyes. What I saw there was the truest form of love.

“I know my showing up here won’t repair everything, but I’m hoping it’s a start.” He reached up and wiped the tears forming under my eyes.

I said the only thing that came to mind. “I love you, Dad.”

His face softened, showing me a different side of my dad than I’d seen before. He’d always had a stoic expression that didn’t portray much emotion at all. At times it was frightening. But what I saw in front of me made me believe he wasn’t the man he’d been while with my mother.

“I think I’m hogging all of your time.” He pulled away and looked over my shoulder.

I turned my head to see Jake standing there with a somber look on his face. I knew I must’ve looked like a mess, but it wouldn’t have mattered to Jake. He walked up to us and put his hand on my arm.

“Emily, are you okay?” Jake asked.

I wiped away more tears. “Yes, I’m perfect actually.” I smiled. “Jake, I want you to meet my dad, Richard Mills.” I introduced the two.

“It’s nice to meet you sir.” They shook hands.

“If you two don’t mind, I think I need to go clean myself up a bit.”

“Take your time.” My dad said.

I left them together in the ballroom talking about who knows what while I visited the ladies room again. I took a few minutes to make my face presentable and apply a fresh coat of crimson lipstick. I pushed back a few loose hairs that had worked their way down from my bun and opened the door to leave. I walked a little way down the hallway and lost my breath when someone grabbed my arm and pulled me into an empty corridor. My back forcibly hit the wall, knocking the rest of my breath clean out of me. When I managed to get my wits about me I looked up to see Grant staring down at me with fury written all over his face.

“What the hell are you doing, Grant?” I bit out.

“I told you I wanted some quality time with you. I think now is as good a time as any.”

“You need to let me go. Now.” I was beyond pissed. I could feel the anger rise in my veins causing me to breathe harder. I’d been here before...one night not long ago, with Michael. Fear caused my blood to run cold and my body start to tremble.

“What the fuck is your problem? I can’t leave you alone for five seconds without you rubbing all over some other guy like a cat in heat.
